A NEW DIMENSION WHEN PRAISING PART 2
HOW TO PRAISE PART 2
Psalm 100:1 to 5 read
I finished last week by saying --
when David appeared
to be near death --
He wrote Psalm 23 --
The Lord is my shepherd
This is a statement declaring as to who God is --
This is - YA/DAH
Now very closely linked to this word YA/DAH -- is
another word --
it is TOW/DAH
Unfortunately TOW/DAH is translated as -- "thanksgiving"
- and of course YA/DAH is also ---
This is the inadequacy of the English language
Part of TOW/DAH also means -- the extension of the hand
-- to adore
Both -- YA/DAH -- and -- TOW/DAH -- is thanksgiving --
done with the hands raised ---
TOW/DAH was especially used to thank God in anticipation
of what he --
was going to do --
The other word YA/DAH for praise looks back and
Says --
Look what he HAS done --
whereas
TOW/DAH -- tends to look FOWARD --
HOW TO PRAISE PART 2
Saying --
I believe God will do this --
You might say it is the prayer lounge - or rest of faith
it is making a statement of faith --
Saying --
God will do it even though I do not see it
right now --
It is used in Psalm 50:23 --
It says --
Whoso offereth praise --
praise here is TOW/DAH
glorifeth me -- and to him that ordereth his
conversation aright -- will I shew the salvation of God
He is a man who in his heart longs to see the fullness
of God's salvation --
and he begins by TOW/DAH
he begins by praising God
that this is the way it is going to be
And God says --
I will show you my salvation --
This is one of the offerings of the Old Testament that
is called the peace offering --
You will find it in
Leviticus 7:12 to 15 --
The peace offering was made when a person was in a
difficulty --
And they would say --
God is going to rescue me from
this difficulty --
And when he does -- I will make the peace
offering -- but right now -
I will praise him
I will TOW/DAH him
HOW TO PRAISE PART 2
So if it looks as if
you are finished
there's nothing left
everything seems to have gone wrong
And at this time --
You say --
I believe God will see me through this --
And when he has got you through it -- you will go to
to the temple - and there make a peace offering --
But now while I am in it
I will praise God
I will TOW/DAH God
The word used all the way through the peace offering is
TOW/DAH
I will praise God for what he will do -- even
though it seems to be that everything is against me ---
I know he will deliver me
Often in the scripture you will find the word --
peace offering -- then -- thank offering
it is a similiar thing --
The difference is -- in the peace offering - you come
confessing sin -- and then you go on to praise him ---
Now the thank offering comes --
because I now have no sense of sin
I now walk with God
I just praise him out of sheer delight
This is why the --
peace and thank
offering are often together
HOW TO PRAISE PART 2
When Jonah was inside the fish --
He said --
I will sacrifice to thee with a voice of
thanksgiving --
This is TOW/DAH
While inside the fish --
He said --
I am going to start praising God --
Why --
because he believed God would get him out of
there --
This is TOW/DAH
He goes on to say --
That which I vow - I will pay --
He is saying --
When I do get out of here -- I will go
straight to the temple -- and give
a peace offering
a thank offering
What was the peace offering ---
They took their offering in their hand - and as they
lifted it up -- they would wave it backwards and fowards --
It is called the wave offering within the peace offering
They would heave it up and down -- it was known as the
heave offering -
and as they did this they were to shout -
very loudly -- Praise to God for all that he had done
It was often called
the sacrifice of shouts
the sacrifice of praise
the TOW/DAH
When I was in trouble I would praise him -- knowing
that he would deliver me just like he said he would --
HOW TO PRAISE PART 2
It would be well to read Psalm 100 --
it is a Psalm of
thanksgiving -- it was used as a thank offering --
It was a time with your hands raised as you made a thank
offering to God --
It says --
Make a joyful noise unto the Lord
serve the Lord with gladness
come before him with joyful singing
-- this is what TOW/DAH means -- a thank offering --
In verse 3 - it says --
Enter his gates with thanksgiving
and his courts with praise
be thankful unto him
and bless his name
This is the TOW/DAH
Another word that is used is -
ZAM/AH --
This word literally means --
to touch the strings ---
The number one instrument that was used - in the worship
of God in the Old Testament - was the equivalent to our
guitar --
ZAM/AH - was the word used to describe - praise to God
in touching the strings of a guitar --
The word goes on to mean --
to sing praises
It means --
to make music
It is impossible to obey the exhortations in the book of
Psalms without music --
HOW TO PRAISE PART 2
A church that forbids music - is denying much of the
Bible --
because music is the gift God gives -- to be used
to praise him ---
The first time - ZAM/AH - is used was in Exodus 15:2 --
It is where Moses and the sons of Israel sang this song
to the Lord --
This is when they were finally delivered out
of Egypt --
When they stood on the edge of the Red Sea -
and saw the remnant of Pharoah's army destroyed --
They knew that they were free --
And they begin to sing
praise to the Lord --
Saying in Exodus 15:2 --
I will sing unto the Lord for he is highly exalted
The horse and its rider were thrown into the sea
The Lord is my strength and my song
He has become my salvation
This is my God - and I will praise him
My Father's God - and I will exalt him
As you go through the Psalms looking for these words --
you will begin to realise that
the believer -- God's people
are seen as having the praises of God in song -- truly on
their lips ---
Psalm 104:33 says --
I will sing unto the Lord as long
as I live -- I will sing praise to my God while I have my
being --
He is saying --
My whole life is a melody to God --
When I am at work I am singing praise to God --
For this you do not need a Hymn Book -- it is an
overflow from within --
HOW TO PRAISE PART 2
you just sing what is coming from
you heart ---
Psalm 18:49 says --
I will give thanks unto thee amoung the nations O Lord
I will sing praises to thy name
Psalm 135:3 says --
Praise the Lord for the Lord is good
sing praises to his name
for it is pleasant
Psalm 92:1 --
It is a good thing to give thanks unto the Lord
and to sing praises unto thy name O most high
Another Hebrew word for praise is --
TE/HILL/AH
This word is to sing praises and it is very close to the
ZAM/AH --
TE/HILL/AH -- is to take all your HAL/ALS --
Take all that you would praise God for --
All that he is - and now just sing it ---
You are now TE/HILL/AH the HAL/ALS --
It is the singing of those praises --
There is an idea - in this word TE/HILL/AH --
and that
it is an unprepared song -- it is unrehearsed ---
Paul gives us the idea of it in -- I Cor 14:15 --
He says --
What is it then -- I will sing with my
understanding -- I will also sing with my Spirit --
HOW TO PRAISE PART 2
That is --
there is a time when I will use my mind
completely and sing a song --
There is also another time when I just want to overflow
to God --
unrehearsed -- unprepared -- and I sing with
my spirit --
I think this what it means in Ephesians 5:18 --
When Paul said --
Be filled with the Spirit speaking to
one another --
-- in Psalms
-- in hymns
-- and in spiritual songs
In spiritual songs -- is a TEH/ILL/AH --
It is an unrehearsed -- unprepared song -- where
even the tune is unprepared ---
Psalm 34:1 says --
I will bless the Lord at all time --
his praise shall be continually in my mouth --
His praise -- his TEH/ILL/AH - shall be continually
in my mouth --
He is saying --
my mouth shall continually be filled
with this song that overflows from my heart to God ---
Psalm 40:3 says --
He has put a new song in my mouth --
even praise -- even - TEH/ILL/AH - unto our God --
This is the new song of the new creation
Revelation 5 says --
It is the mark of the church --
It says --
They sang a new song of the lamb
HOW TO PRAISE PART 2
He has put a new song in my mouth -- I am born again--
I just keep overflowing with the joy of this song --
This is TE/HILL/AH
this is praise unto my God
Psalm 71:6 says --
My praise -- my TE/HILL/AH --
shall be continually of thee --
Verse 8 says --
Let my mouth be filled with thy praise
-- with thy TE/HILL/AH ---
The idea of this is no Hymn Book --
No one says -- Hymn 150
This is sung from out of your own heart -- it is an
overflow of praise from within - to God --
The leaders of the singing should be sensitive to this
They should be looking at those ones who are singing --
And those ones who are playing an instrument -
It is they who are to start and bring forth this
spontaneous praise from within the congregation --
David appointed Levites -- he appointed leaders to
lead the congregation into praise --
I say to you --
Open your whole being to the Holy
Spirit --
The Holy Spirit is the only one who can make real to us
the presence of God --
Unless the Holy Spirit makes known to us the presence of
God --
Then everything that I have said becomes very hollow -
and very shallow -- they will be just words --
HOW TO PRAISE PART 2
But when the presence of God is real -- and when
praise when - TE/HILL/AH - is born by the Holy Spirit --
then praise becomes natural --
then you will really see the manifestation of the
presence of God --
When you see people yelling and screaming at a football
game -- you must admit there is something there - even if
you cannot see anything in it ---
I myself cannot see what the great noise is all about --
but I do admit - they do see something that I do not see ---
They are plugged into something that I am not plugged
into --
When the presence of God is real -- I respond --
The world may not understand -- but they must admit
there is something there --
That you are plugged into something that they are not --
That you are seeing something that they are not seeing -
When these people come into most church services -- they
are sure there is nothing there --
they are right - because
there is nothing there ---
But when they come into a church service where the Holy
Spirit is making the presence of God real --
they know there
is something there but they do not know what it is ---
They are beholding people who are interacting with a
very real God --
I say to you --
Open yourself up to the Holy Spirit --
And as you do this - obey God --
for he commands you to
praise him --
Why not dare to praise God
HOW TO PRAISE PART 2
At first you might feel stupid for you are moving out of
religion into reality --
As you dare to praise God in this way -- there will come
forth a whole new lifestyle --
A lifestyle that is out of this world --
you are now worshipping and praising God in Heavenly Places
Although you are a Christian --
it could very easily be
that you may wonder if you were ever truly a Christian --
because the reality of the living God is so tremendous ---
The presence of the living God in the Holy Spirit is
truly real --
for God dwells in the praises of his people ---
AMEN.
